US President Donald Trump’s latest comments on the war in Ukraine signal Washington is stepping back and pushing responsibility onto Europe, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday.

"President Trump has stated that Ukraine can, with the support of the European Union, regain all of its territory," Tusk said in an X post.

"Behind this surprising optimism lies the announcement of reduced US involvement and shifting responsibility for ending the war onto Europe," he added.

"Truth is better than illusion," Tusk also wrote.

Trump said this week on Truth Social that "Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and win all of Ukraine back in its original form."

He added that with European and NATO financial support, restoring Ukraine’s prewar borders was “very much an option.”

The remarks drew attention across Europe, where officials worry about a weakening of American involvement in the conflict.

Britain's The Economist magazine reported on Wednesday that Trump’s new stance on Ukraine appears to show he is "washing his hands of the war."

If so, the magazine said, “Ukraine and its European allies will have to face Russia alone.”

The Washington Post cited a White House official it did not name as saying Trump’s tougher rhetoric toward Russia is a negotiating tactic intended to pressure the Kremlin over its war against Ukraine.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II.
