FT: US helps Ukraine target Russian energy sites

The United States has reportedly been assisting Ukraine in mounting long-range strikes against Russian energy facilities, in a coordinated campaign aimed at undermining Moscow’s economy and pressuring President Vladimir Putin into negotiations, the Financial Times reports.

According to multiple Ukrainian and US sources cited by FT, Washington has been supplying Kyiv with detailed intelligence on target vulnerabilities, flight corridors, timing, altitude and routes – effectively enabling drone operations that bypass Russian air defences.

While Ukraine retains ultimate responsibility for choosing strike targets, the US is said to be closely involved at all planning stages.

The report adds that, since the summer of 2025, Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil and gas infrastructure have forced Moscow to curtail diesel exports, cut refining capacity by up to 20 per cent, and imposed growing dependency on imported fuel.

Requests for comment were declined. Neither the White House, the office of President Zelensky, nor Ukraine’s foreign ministry responded to inquiries, the Reuters agency said.
