Trump told reporters he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is “serious about peace” and confirmed he would speak with him again after the meeting. “Too many people have died,” Trump said. “There’s nothing more important.”

Zelensky, for his part, described recent talks as “the most active diplomatic days of the year” and said “90% of the deal is done,” though key issues remain unresolved, including Ukraine’s demand for firm security guarantees and refusal to cede any territory.

The Ukrainian leader warned that despite talks, Russia continued to bombard Ukrainian cities with missiles, drones and bombs.

“This is the real attitude of Putin and his entourage,” Zelensky said. “They do not want to end the war.”

European leaders were not present at the Mar-a-Lago meeting but are expected to be debriefed in a joint call during the talks.

Trump emphasized that European nations are “very much involved” and “in line with this meeting.”

Zelensky met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney en route to Florida and held online talks with European and NATO leaders to coordinate positions ahead of Sunday’s meeting.
