The Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces said it had deployed "all necessary forces and resources at its disposal" to ensure the safety of Polish airspace and was "monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis."
Military aircraft were activated in the afternoon, the Operational Command said in a statement, adding that measures were taken to ensure security in areas near the Ukrainian border.
"Fighter jets on standby have been scrambled, supported by helicopters, while ground-based air defence systems and radar reconnaissance have been placed on maximum alert," the army said on X.
Shortly before 5 p.m., the Operational Command said the threat of Russian strikes on regions bordering Poland had decreased and that military aircraft were returning to base.
"Activated ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have returned to standard operational activities," it said.
It reported no violations of Polish airspace during the attacks.
Russia unleashed a daytime drone attack on Ukraine on Wednesday, targeting critical infrastructure, according to reports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on X that Russia had launched waves of Shahed drones against his country throughout the day, "in particular, deliberately targeting regions closest to the borders of NATO countries."
He added that at least six people were killed in the strikes and dozens were reported injured, including children.
"Since midnight, at least 800 Russian drones have already been launched, and the attack is ongoing, with additional drones entering our country’s airspace," he wrote.
It was the first such major attack after a short-lived US-brokered ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia that ended on Monday, the Reuters news agency reported.
