Six people were killed and 64 wounded in Kyiv, including three children aged 3, 11 and 17, according to Kyiv military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko. In Dnipro, authorities said 11 people died — among them two children — and 35 were injured.
"In many locations, rescuers and services are still working to address the consequences of the Russian attack on Kyiv", Tkachenko wrote. "Unfortunately, these numbers may change".
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said civilian infrastructure bore the brunt of the assault. A nine-story residential building partly collapsed after a direct missile strike in the Podilskyi district. Drone fragments fell near kindergartens in the Darnytskyi and Obolonskyi districts, sparking fires. A medical clinic in the Holosiivskyi district had its second and third floors destroyed, and several cars caught fire.
Ukrainian air force communications units detected 729 strike systems over Ukraine, including 33 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 27 Kh-101 cruise missiles, eight Tsirkon anti-ship missiles, five Kalibr cruise missiles and 656 combat drones.
Russia had warned last week it would carry out "systematic strikes on military targets and decision-making centers in Kyiv", calling it a response to a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian-occupied Luhansk region that Moscow said killed 21 people. Foreign nationals and diplomats were urged to leave the city. Despite the warnings, diplomatic missions remained. Poland's embassy told Polish Press Agency (PAP) its staff was safe.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned Monday that a large-scale attack was being prepared, citing intelligence reports. When air raid sirens sounded around 1:30 a.m., residents fled to subway stations, sheltering on platforms with children, pets and blankets.
Rescue operations were ongoing Tuesday in 29 locations across nearly all of Kyiv's districts, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. Search-and-rescue efforts continued in Dnipro, where people were believed trapped under the rubble of a destroyed four-story building.
