Zelensky said Russia fired 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones at Kyiv, the surrounding region and Kharkiv, calling it a deliberate attack on facilities that US President Donald Trump had declared off limits.
“Russia has never so ostentatiously shown a lack of respect towards the United States”, Zelensky wrote on Telegram. “Russia does not consider the words of the US president binding”.
Three people were killed in Kyiv, according to the State Emergency Service, which said the number of injured was rising. Two more died and six, including a child, were wounded in the Dnipropetrovsk region, regional military chief Oleksandr Hanzha said.
Zelensky said 26 components of the energy system and some oil and gas facilities were significantly damaged. He warned of longer power cuts to come.
He said Moscow had wasted a chance to de-escalate and urged Trump to impose tough sanctions and supply more missiles for Patriot air defence systems. “No country should be left alone in the face of Russian aggression”, he said.
The strikes also hit railway infrastructure in five regions, causing heavy material damage but no casualties, Ukrzaliznytsia chief Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said. A drone strike set an oil depot ablaze in Lutsk, near the Polish border, according to city council secretary Andrii Razumovskyi.
Russia had already hit Kyiv with ballistic missiles late Tuesday, again without warning from partners, Zelensky said. A missile struck a combined heat and power plant and damaged a residential building.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump said the United States was still helping Ukraine and sharing intelligence.
