Marcin Przydacz made the statement in an interview with public broadcaster Polish Radio on Wednesday.
It came after Ukraine on Tuesday proposed to assume neutral status in exchange for security guarantees from a host of countries including Poland, according to officials.
Przydacz said Poland was “in contact” with Ukraine’s negotiators at the peace talks with Russia. He added: “We are aware of where the talks are heading.”
‘Too early to discuss Poland’s role’
“It is too early to say what Poland’s role will be because the agreement is far from being finalised,” Przydacz said with reference to the peace negotiations, which are taking place in Turkey.
“I can only say, as President Andrzej Duda stated, that we won’t agree to any steps that contradict Poland's national interests,” he added.
Przydacz also told Polish Radio that, according to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, security guarantees for Kyiv “would have to be approved by the parliaments of the countries in question.”
Under the Ukrainian proposal, Kyiv would agree not to join alliances or host bases of foreign troops, but would have its security guaranteed along the lines of the NATO alliance’s principle of collective defence, the Reuters news agency reported.
The countries mentioned as potential security guarantors for Ukraine include permanent members of the United Nations Security Council: China, France, Britain, Russia and the United States, according to PAP.
In addition, Kyiv would have its security guaranteed by Poland, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy and Turkey, officials told reporters.
Wednesday is day 35 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
