Onysko had served in the Ukrainian army ever since the start of the Russian invasion last February, taking part in the defence of the southern Kherson province and the eastern Donbas region, among other assignments, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Onysko’s wife Olga Birzul announced his death in a Facebook post on Sunday.

She wrote: “You were very tired, but you looked after your brothers. You mourned every loss. You said there was no greater torment during war than telling the news to the families of the dead. Now I have gone through the feeling myself. My heart broke when your soldier wept as he swore he’d never met a better man and commander.”

Birzul did not give details of how and where her husband was killed, the PAP news agency reported.

Onysko’s film credits included the Russian-Ukrainian war biopic Battle for Sevastopol (2015), Svitlana Shymko’s documentary The Fall of Lenin (2017) and Frédéric Petitjean’s action thriller Cold Blood (2019), starring Jean Reno, according to the PAP news agency.

Ukraine’s National Film Centre has said in a statement that Onysko’s death represented “an enormous loss” to Ukraine’s film community and the entire country.

Movie maker Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk wrote: “It’s hard to believe this news. A person with a great heart, spiritual strength, a deep sense of justice and unbridled truth in his every word, look and act.”

Writer and filmmaker Iryna Cilyk said that Onysko had died “a hero’s death.”

Onysko is survived by his wife and nine-year-old daughter.

Wednesday is day 315 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
