The two politicians also talked about ways to boost Polish-Armenian cooperation, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
Witek and Simonyan, who heads Armenia’s National Assembly parliament, focused their discussions on cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, as well as bilateral economic and academic collaboration, according to officials.
Another major topic for the Polish and Armenian top lawmakers was “assistance for Kyiv’s war effort against Russian aggression,” Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Witek and Simonyan stressed “very good cooperation between the parliaments of Poland and Armenia, including at the level of bilateral groups."
Witek noted “possibilities to deepen parliamentary dialogue and strengthen contacts between our chambers at other levels,” the PAP news agency reported.
Meanwhile, Simonyan thanked Polish MPs for passing a resolution "to mark 650 years since the first Armenian settlers arrived in the then Kingdom of Poland,” the Polish lower house, the Sejm, said in a statement.
Support for Ukraine
The two parliamentary Speakers talked at length about Russia’s war on Ukraine, the IAR news agency reported.
Witek "outlined Polish support for refugees from Ukraine" and assistance provided by Polish MPs, according to officials.
She "stressed the need for countries to comply with the sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine,” according to the statement by the Polish lower house.
Witek also outlined "the Polish Sejm's efforts to help Ukraine on the international stage,” including last month’s meeting with the ambassadors of African countries on “Russia’s policy towards African states," the IAR news agency reported.
The Polish lower-house Speaker further “highlighted the threat from Belarus and the concerning situation on the Polish-Belarusian border,” according to officials.
Armenia’s Simonyan described his meeting with Witek as a “very intensive productive exchange" on issues including "democracy, regional geopolitics and security," as well as "Armenian-Polish inter-parliamentary cooperation."
Later in the day, the Armenian parliamentary leader met with Polish President Andrzej Duda, the PAP news agency reported.
On Wednesday, Armenia’s Simonyan is scheduled to hold talks with Poland’s upper-house Speaker Tomasz Grodzki.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
Tuesday is day 496 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
