According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Russian air defence systems shot down nine drones approaching the city.
Emergency crews were dispatched to areas where drone debris had fallen, though no significant damage was reported.
Elsewhere, a drone strike caused a brief fire at the Azot chemical plant in Russia’s Tula region, injuring two people. Additionally, seven drones were intercepted over the Kaluga region, both of which border the Moscow region to the south, local officials said.
Reuters was unable to independently verify these claims, and there was no immediate response from Ukraine.
Russia’s civil aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, announced on Telegram that flights at Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports were suspended to ensure passenger safety.
The incident comes amid a surge in cross-border attacks by both Russia and Ukraine, even as the two sides have resumed peace talks for the first time since the early phase of the war, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
