According to Ukraine’s security chief Vasyl Maliuk, the plan was orchestrated by a Polish citizen and retired military officer. Maliuk stated that the man had been recruited by Russian intelligence decades ago, remained loyal to Soviet ideals, and had allegedly been preparing the attack for years.

The suspect was detained through joint efforts by Polish and Ukrainian security services.

Polish news outlet Interia reported that the assassination attempt was planned for April last year, according to Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesperson for Poland’s Ministry of the Interior and Administration.

Dobrzyński, via social media, referred to a statement form April 17, 2024, explaining that last year officers from the Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained a person suspected of offering to cooperate with Russian intelligence services.

The individual in question was a Polish citizen, Paweł K., who was arrested in the Lublin region in southeastern Poland in connection with an investigation into his readiness to act on behalf of a foreign intelligence sercive against the Republic of Poland.
