Svyrydenko, who has served as deputy prime minister and economy minister under outgoing Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, is expected to replace him after five years in office.

The shake-up has been anticipated for days in Kyiv, where officials also confirmed that Defense Minister Rustem Umerov will step down to become Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.

“I have proposed that Yuliia Svyrydenko lead the Government of Ukraine and significantly renew its work. I look forward to the presentation of the new government’s action plan in the near future,” President Zelensky wrote on his official social media profile on Monday afternoon.

The Ukrainian president revealed the nomination just after wrapping up his meeting with U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg in Kyiv earlier today.
