Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that Russia’s refusal to heed repeated calls for a ceasefire was complicating efforts to end the war, as he prepared for talks with US President Donald Trump in Washington.

"Russia rebuffs numerous calls for a ceasefire and has not yet determined when it will stop the killing. This complicates the situation," Zelensky wrote on X.

"Stopping the killing is a key element of stopping the war."

He added that if Moscow lacked the will to carry out a "simple order" to stop its strikes, "it may take a lot of effort to get Russia to have the will to implement far greater – peaceful coexistence with its neighbors for decades."

Zelensky confirmed he would meet Trump on Monday, saying he was grateful for the invitation.

"It is important that everyone agrees there needs to be a conversation at the level of leaders to clarify all the details and determine which steps are necessary and will work," he said.

The White House has said Monday’s talks will focus on preparations for possible three-way negotiations on a ceasefire involving Zelensky,

Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump flagged the idea at a recent meeting in Alaska and reiterated it in a call with the Ukrainian leader.

The Kremlin has so far declined to comment.

According to US and Russian media, a meeting between the three leaders could take place on Friday, though this remains unconfirmed.

Zelensky also welcomed Friday’s statement by the leaders of eight Nordic and Baltic countries, who stressed there should be no restrictions on Ukraine’s armed forces or its international cooperation.

"The unity of all strengthens each one," he said.

During his Washington visit, Zelensky is expected to raise the issue of long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.

The United States has pledged such commitments, with several European countries joining the initiative.
