Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said late Monday the security guarantees “will certainly be announced together with our partners,” with “more specifics,” and “will be put on paper and formalized within a week to ten days.”
He called his White House meetings his best yet with U.S. President Donald Trump and said the discussions were “good.”
“We are certain the war will end. It is very important for us that it is not a pause in fighting but a true peace, protected by our partners’ security guarantees,” he said.
Zelenskiy said security guarantees were a key issue at the start of a path toward ending the war, adding the United States was signaling it would participate and that there was political will. “I believe this is a big step forward,” he said.
Asked about a Financial Times report that Ukraine offered to buy $100 billion of U.S. weapons with European funds to secure U.S. guarantees after a peace deal with Russia—alongside a $50 billion drone production agreement—Zelenskiy said details from partners should emerge within ten days.
On territory, Zelenskiy said the issue would remain between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He said he held a lengthy conversation with Trump on Ukrainian territory and that the U.S. side prepared a map showing the current front situation.
Zelenskiy said Trump phoned Putin on Monday during the leaders’ visit to the White House. The Russian side proposed an initial bilateral meeting between Russia and Ukraine, followed by a trilateral session involving the United States.
“We are ready for all formats at the leaders’ level,” Zelenskiy said, confirming readiness for a bilateral meeting with Putin and then a trilateral one. No dates have been set.
Talks at the White House also covered the return of Ukrainian children taken by Russia and an “all-for-all” exchange of prisoners—military, civilian and political prisoners—with Trump set to support Zelenskiy on those efforts.
