In a post shared on social media on Wednesday morning, Tusk wrote: "Budapest? Not everyone may remember this, but in 1994 Ukraine already got assurances of territorial integrity from the US, Russia and the UK. In Budapest. Maybe I’m superstitious, but this time I would try to find another place."
Tusk’s post came a day after former U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The idea of hosting talks on Ukraine’s future in Budapest has appeared in some U.S. media, alongside other possible locations such as Geneva, Switzerland. Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed Moscow, but the Ukrainian side rejected the offer.
U.S. Newsweek reported on Tuesday that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she could "neither confirm nor deny" the potential location of proposed talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and U.S. President Donald Trump.
