Pope Leo encourages prayers for Ukraine on its Independence Day

Pope Leo XIV encouraged the faithful to join the global initiative of prayer for Ukraine and for peace in the country. His Holiness elaborated on this during a meeting with the faithful during the Angelus prayer on Ukraine's Independence Day.

Addressing the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square on Ukraine's Independence Day at noon, the Pope said: 

"On Friday, August 22, we dedicated our prayers and fasting to our brothers and sisters who suffer because of war. Today we join our Ukrainian brothers and sisters who, through the spiritual initiative 'World Prayer for Ukraine', are asking the Lord to grant peace to their war-torn country."

Leo XIV also posted this quote on his social media on Sunday - in English and in Ukrainian.

Numerous Ukrainian flags were visible in the crowd in front of the Vatican Basilica on Sunday.
