During his visit on Monday, 25 August, Klingbeil called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage seriously in peace talks, while emphasizing that Ukraine must be directly involved in any negotiations.

In his view, "Putin should have no illusions that Germany's support for Ukraine can falter."

The politician reiterated that Germany continues to be one of Ukraine’s largest supporters globally and in Europe, and that a lasting peace will require a ceasefire and reliable security guarantees, coordinated closely with international partners.

Klingbeil warned that Putin should not expect Germany’s backing of Ukraine to weaken, urging Moscow to show genuine interest in resolving the conflict, which began in February 2022 and has been described as Europe’s bloodiest war in 80 years.
