The United States sees no imminent summit between President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and a Lavrov–Rubio meeting is also not planned, the State Department said, casting doubt on talks once touted for Budapest.

A spokesperson told the Kyiv Independent there are “no plans” for a Trump-Putin meeting “in the immediate future.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a “productive” call on Monday, but another meeting is “not necessary.”

The update follows Trump’s October 16 claim he would meet Putin in Budapest “in the coming weeks.”

NBC’s Garrett Haake said planning is “on hold,” a line echoed by the BBC and CBS.

Trump later said: “I don’t want to have a wasted meeting … We haven’t made a determination yet."

Moscow had said preparatory work was continuing, though no date was set.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said “serious preparation” was needed. Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev insisted “preparations continue,” arguing media were twisting “immediate future.”

The talks are overshadowed by disputes over a ceasefire and territory.

Trump announced the summit a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who sought Tomahawk missiles.

Trump was reported to have urged Kyiv to accept Russia’s demand for full control of Donetsk; he later denied asking Ukraine to cede unoccupied areas and suggested a truce along current lines.

Kyiv and European partners backed that idea; Moscow rejected it, citing “root causes.”

After reports the talks were shelved, NATO said Secretary-General Marc Rutte would visit Trump to discuss support for Ukraine and efforts toward “lasting peace.”

Zelensky on Tuesday linked Russia’s retreat from diplomacy to Ukraine’s lack of long-range Tomahawks, calling deep-strike capabilities “the indispensable key to peace.”
