Sikorski confirmed that he shared his views on the issue on Thursday in a meeting with Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka, stressing that the simplest way for Ukraine to lose Western support is by tolerating corruption.
The Polish minister noted that there have already been resignations and arrests in Ukraine in connection with the scandal, which he described as “probably a proper response by state authorities,” while also adding that there had been attempts to limit the effectiveness of the anti-corruption service.
“How the Ukrainian authorities respond will be crucial,” he said.
“If Ukraine were to tolerate corruption, it would not enter the European Union. The EU demands integrity and proper procedures,” Sikorski emphasised.
The head of diplomacy also highlighted Poland’s national interest in supporting Ukraine.
“For us, Ukraine is a functional buffer, a safeguard against Russian aggression. Ukraine is fighting bravely,” Sikorski said.
“There are kilometre-long cemeteries of brave Ukrainians who died in a war that keeps Putin’s army hundreds of kilometres from our borders, rather than in Medyka. We must remember this and show solidarity with Ukraine.”
“Of course, Ukrainians must follow our regulations, and we expect most of them to return home after the war, but today we should show wisdom and solidarity,” Sikorski added.
