Poland's Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek told the crowd he hoped Ukraine would join NATO and the European Union, and that "no one will ever succeed in dividing" the two nations.

He thanked Ukrainian soldiers "fighting in the trenches," saying they were defending not just their own land but "Europe, against hordes from the East."

Żurek noted that more than 100 prosecutors had been working with police since February to tackle hate crimes against Ukrainians in Poland.

"Those who thought they could insult, abuse or attack with impunity are now led before a court in handcuffs the next day," he stressed.

Ukraine's ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, thanked the country for hosting millions of Ukrainians and for its support of Kyiv's war effort.

"Without Poland, it would be very difficult to defend ourselves, almost impossible," he said.

Twenty-nine diplomats attended, among them envoys from the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Lithuania and Albania, as well as deputy heads of the US, French and Spanish missions.

The event, held under the slogan "Our shared independence" was organised by the Euromaidan Warsaw group and the Stand With Ukraine Foundation.
