The proposed expansion, which would be the largest to date, would blacklist 1,571 people, companies and organisations linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex, according to Polish Radio.
The broadcaster’s Brussels correspondent, Beata Płomecka, said she had seen the proposed list, which was drawn up by experts from the EU’s diplomatic corps and targets Russia's defence sector.
The proposal covers 744 people in senior positions at companies considered part of the military-industrial complex, as well as 827 companies, institutions and organisations.
The targets include companies involved in aviation, rocketry and space, shipbuilding, electronics, radio and telecommunications equipment, chemicals and metallurgy. The list also includes plants that repair and service aircraft, ships and armoured vehicles.
The proposed measures are intended as the EU’s response to intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine and hybrid attacks in Europe.
Negotiations on the new listings will only move forward if EU ambassadors agree on Monday, or by Tuesday at the latest, to extend the bloc's existing sanctions list, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported. That list contains more than 3,000 entries.
