Kremlin hopes US election upset will not hurt Trump’s Ukraine peace push

The Kremlin said on Wednesday it hoped Democratic gains in US midterm elections would not undermine President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the Ukraine war, calling the vote “an internal American matter”.

“We sincerely hope that Trump will continue his peace efforts”, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in remarks carried by Russian state media.

Asked whether the new makeup of Congress could upset those plans, he replied only that it was “an internal American matter”.

Peskov said another round of three-way talks between Ukraine, the United States and Russia would take place soon. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in Berlin on Tuesday they would be held in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11, a date US envoy Steve Witkoff and the Kremlin had earlier confirmed.

Partial results from Tuesday’s vote showed Trump’s Republicans losing their majority in both chambers of Congress to the Democrats, who took at least six Senate seats from the Republicans, including in Texas, long seen as a party stronghold.
