A presidential hopeful from Poland's opposition right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) party, who had previously vowed to address accusations of fraud related to the acquisition of an apartment from an elderly man, has now chosen not to testify at a Friday hearing, according to politicians from his circle.

Krzysztof Szczucki, a PiS member of parliament, announced in an interview with Polish news outlet wp.pl that Karol Nawrocki will not appear before the Justice Committee tomorrow to explain his purchase of an apartment in Gdańsk.

According to Szczucki, the committee established by the Sejm (the lower house of the Polish parliament) lacks the authority to address the financial disclosures of Nawrocki, a PiS presidential candidate who currently serves as president of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN).

IAR, the news agency of Poland’s national broadcaster, cites a comment from Jakub Rudnicki, an MP from the ruling Civil Coalition (KO), who believes Nawrocki is avoiding the committee because he has something to hide.

“Nawrocki is afraid of the truth and afraid of confrontation. I believe the whole of Poland deserves an apology from him, as this is pure evasion - following the doctrine of the ‘young wolves,’ where if you’re caught, you say it wasn’t your hand. It would be good for all of Poland to see this, but Nawrocki will keep running away,” Rudnicki told IAR.

Just two days ago, Nawrocki had declared that he would fulfill his duties and attend the committee session. He may be questioned by prosecutors beforehand, as two reports have been filed regarding possible criminal conduct in his acquisition of property in Gdańsk.
