Robert Opas from the National Police Headquarters (KGP) said on Monday that the death toll was down on the same period last year, but still high.

He added that there were 5,481 accidents since the start of the holiday period, 451 fewer than last year. There were 23 fewer fatalities.

The most common cause of crashes is excessive speed, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

During this year’s five-day August long weekend starting last Wednesday, 31 people were killed and 505 injured in 420 road accidents.
