“The cavers left pieces of equipment most likely in order to enter a crevice, which would be impossible to do fully equipped,” Jan Krzysztof, the head of the Polish Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service, told PAP.

Dozens of rescuers have been working since Saturday to locate the two trapped men.

On Thursday, a group of six people entered the Wielka Śnieżna Cave, the longest and deepest in the Tatra mountains.

On Saturday evening, four people emerged and alerted the authorities that two of their colleagues had been trapped by unexpected flooding inside the cave.

On Sunday evening, rescuers set off a series of small explosions within the tunnel complex, hoping to improve access to the trapped pair.
