Almost 127, 000 checks were conducted in the last 24 hours alone, Mariusz Ciarka, a spokesman for the country’s central police headquarters, said on Thursday morning.

In more than 300 cases, officers decided that people qualified for a steep fine after breaking government-imposed restrictions on their movements, state news agency PAP reported.

Ciarka noted that under rules on counteracting infectious diseases, Polish sanitary inspectors can impose a fine of up to PLN 30,000 (EUR 6,590, USD 7,155).

"We appeal for people to be reasonable and responsible - let's stay at home for our common good," Ciarka added.

Quarantine in Poland is imposed on people who are in good health but who have been in contact with someone who is infected with the COVID-19 disease, or who is suspected to be infected.

The quarantine period last 14 days, during which people are not allowed to leave home.

A total of 5,341 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 164 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Thursday morning.
