Poland thwarts cocaine smugglers

Polish police and border guards have thwarted an attempt to smuggle a haul of cocaine worth a record PLN 3 billion (EUR 675m, USD 760m), Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday.

He added the drugs had been initially brought from Ecuador to Germany, where they had not been detected.

Morawiecki said the smugglers had probably intended to send the cocaine not only to Poland but also to Scandinavian countries.

The bust was the latest major crackdown on drug smugglers in Poland in recent months.

In March, officials said that Polish police and tax inspectors had seized a record haul of 275 kilogrammes of heroin from the Middle East.

The drugs had an estimated street value of more than PLN 60 million (EUR 14 million, USD 16 million), Morawiecki said at the time.
