Education and Science Minister Przemysław Czarnek said Poland had outstanding scientists who needed a ship to ferry them to research stations.
He added: "We are among the world leaders, and we are buying a ship… because today we spend millions of zlotys each year on renting such a research vessel."
The new ship will be operated by the Maritime University in the northwestern port city of Szczecin, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported. It did not specify how much the vessel would cost.
