Poland reports 194 new coronavirus cases, 8 more deaths

Poland on Monday reported 194 new coronavirus infections and eight more deaths, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 2,875,328 and fatalities to 74,160.

Of the new cases confirmed on Monday, 27 were in the central region of Mazowieckie, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

Meanwhile, 26 new infections were reported in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

The western province of Wielkopolskie, which is home to the major city of Poznań, had the third-highest number of new infections confirmed by officials on Monday, at 23.

The latest deaths in Poland’s coronavirus outbreak are six people with pre-existing medical conditions and two who died directly because of COVID-19, the Polish health ministry said.

On Sunday, Poland confirmed 13 deaths and 312 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 38 deaths and 415 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country more than a year ago.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

3,183 in hospitals, 58,527 quarantined

The health ministry announced on Monday morning that 3,183 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 463 of them on ventilators, with a further 58,527 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 2,645,877 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, including 727 over the last 24 hours, the health ministry also said.

Curbs eased as virus ebbs

Poland on Sunday allowed more people to attend large gatherings and ceremonies such as weddings as it moves to the next phase of easing its coronavirus lockdown.

The limit for the number of wedding guests rose from 50 to 150 beginning June 6, not including those who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Amid a fall in fresh infections, the country has also raised the limit for the number of people allowed at trade fairs, exhibitions and conferences as well as on public transportation.
