Poland reports 27,458 new coronavirus cases, 562 more deaths

Poland on Thursday reported 27,458 new coronavirus infections and 562 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 3,760,048 and fatalities to 87,357.

Of the new cases confirmed on Thursdaythe most—3,969—were in the central Mazowieckie province, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

Meanwhile, 3,709 new infections were reported in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

The latest deaths in Poland's coronavirus outbreak are 397 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 165 others who died directly because of COVID-19, the health ministry said.

On Wednesday, Poland confirmed 592 deaths and 28,542 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 504 deaths and 19,366 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

23,433 in hospitals, 662,036 quarantined

The Polish health ministry announced on Thursday morning that 23,433 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 2,053 of them on ventilators, with a further 662,036 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 3,211,558 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Health Minister Adam Niedzielski this week announced a raft of new coronavirus restrictions in response to a persistently high daily number of infections and the threat from the new, highly transmissible strain of the virus, omicron.
