In one alarming incident, a projectile flew through a window into a room where a resident was sleeping. "We will demand an explanation from the army," Franciszek Romankiewicz, the mayor of Biała Piska, told PAP newswire.
The General Command of the Armed Forces confirmed that during allied shooting exercises involving Romanian soldiers at the Bemowo Piskie shooting range this week, ricochets damaged a building near the range. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
However, Romankiewicz emphasized that the situation involved not just one bullet, but "at least several." He estimated that as many as seven or more projectiles struck the area, an event he described as unprecedented.
He noted that the bullets impacted several apartment blocks about 4 kilometers from the training ground, as well as a school playground and a shop gate. All the missiles have since been secured by the Military Police.
The most serious incident involved a shell that broke through a window and penetrated the wall of an apartment where a man was sleeping. Although the resident was in shock and received medical attention, he is now fine and has not requested relocation. However, repairs are needed for the damaged window and wall.
The Military Police are currently investigating the incident, which occurred at the Bemowo Piskie training ground, home to NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup, including soldiers from the United States, United Kingdom, Romania, and Croatia.
