Kaczyński accused journalists in the Sejm - the lower house of the Polish parliament - of behaving like “political operatives” when asked to comment on the widely publicized case involving Nawrocki’s acquisition of an apartment from an 80-year-old man.
The phrase he used, rooted in the language of Poland’s communist past, suggested that the reporters were serving a political agenda rather than acting as independent media.
Commenting on Kaczyński’s outburst, Gazeta Wyborcza columnist Dominika Wielowieyska said the PiS leader’s tense response suggests emotions within the party may have reached a breaking point.
In her view, “It’s not so much Karol Nawrocki’s second apartment, but the party’s response to the scandal involving one of its longtime allies that may influence the election outcome.”
PM Tusk hits back at Kaczyński over Nawrocki housing scandal
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also responded sharply to Jarosław Kaczyński’s comments, adding fuel to the growing controversy surrounding Karol Nawrocki’s housing scandal.
In the latest of a series of remarks on the matter, Tusk accused the PiS leader of being fully aware of the issues surrounding Nawrocki, the party’s presidential candidate.
"You knew everything, Jarosław," Tusk said, listing allegations ranging from ties to criminals to the controversial acquisition of an apartment.
"You knew about the connections with gangsters, about 'arranging girls,' about the love apartment at the Museum of the Second World War, about the apartment fraud, and other matters still hidden. The full responsibility for this disaster lies with you," Tusk added.
