Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Wednesday congratulated President-elect Karol Nawrocki on his election victory and pledged support for the conservative historian as he prepares to take office, following a controversial report by an Israeli newspaper.

Sikorski made the remarks after Polish diplomats formally protested an article in The Times of Israel that accused Nawrocki of Holocaust revisionism.

"The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will naturally support him in this mission, and we have already lodged a protest over an article in the Israeli press," Sikorski told reporters in the upper house of parliament.

He argued, however, that under the constitution, foreign policy is the responsibility of the government, not the head of state.

"Poland cannot have two foreign policies," Sikorski said, warning against any attempts to pursue competing diplomatic agendas.

"The president is obliged to cooperate with the prime minister and the foreign minister," he added.

Poland’s embassy in Tel Aviv has sent a letter to the Times of Israel, objecting to its description of Nawrocki as a "Holocaust revisionist," calling the label "unjust and inaccurate," according to Sikorski.

Poland's National Electoral Commission confirmed on Monday that Nawrocki, backed by the conservative opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, edged liberal rival Rafał Trzaskowski with 50.89 percent to 49.11 percent in Sunday’s runoff.

Sikorski, a senior figure in Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s governing centrist-liberal Civic Coalition, acknowledged the narrow defeat but predicted that his ruling coalition would win the 2027 parliamentary elections.

Nawrocki will be sworn in on August 6 for a five-year term, succeeding conservative Andrzej Duda.
