Poland's top diplomat Radosław Sikorski has described the election of opposition candidate Karol Nawrocki as president as a clear sign that democracy in the country remains strong.

Speaking in Berlin on Wednesday, Sikorski said the result of Sunday’s vote was a reflection of democratic health in Poland.

"There is no arguing with democracy – the voice of voters is the voice of God," he told reporters during a joint appearance with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul.

Sikorski praised the outcome of the election, which saw Karol Nawrocki - a conservative candidate supported by the right-wing opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party - narrowly defeat his centrist, pro-European rival Rafał Trzaskowski.

The National Electoral Commission confirmed the results on Monday, with Nawrocki receiving 50.89 percent of the vote.

The Polish foreign minister underlined that, as in Germany, the presidency in Poland does not dictate foreign policy.

"This won’t change," he said, adding that foreign policy lies with the government.

He acknowledged, however, that the president holds key powers such as the right to veto legislation.

Addressing concerns over Nawrocki’s previous scepticism toward Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, Sikorski suggested that holding office often brings a shift in perspective.

"The world looks different from the presidential office than it does from the campaign trail," he said.

Poland's top diplomat expressed hope that Nawrocki would continue Poland’s longstanding bipartisan support for Ukraine, citing the examples of former leader Lech Kaczyński and outgoing President Andrzej Duda.

Germany pledges continuity in cooperation

Germany's Wadephul reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment to close cooperation with Warsaw, particularly in defense and joint military initiatives.

He welcomed Nawrocki’s election and noted that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had already reached out with a message of friendship.
