“It was a difficult night,” the minister said, adding that emergency services across the country are continuously monitoring the situation.
The politician highlighted growing concerns in Bielsko County in southern Poland, especially around the Wapienica and Łowica Biała rivers near Bielsko-Biała, where a flood alert was issued just before midnight on Sunday.
Minister Kierwiński assured that, if needed, the Territorial Defense Forces, the State Fire Service, and the Officer Cadet Schools are all on standby and ready to respond.
The head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration also warned against the spread of unverified information and disinformation, which he noted was present, among others, in statements made by politicians from the right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) party.
Severe weather warnings issued as rain front moves across Poland
As a rain front sweeps across the country, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued level one, two, and three warnings - the highest on a three-tier scale - effective through Monday.
Alerts cover heavy rain and thunderstorms in southern and southwestern regions, with forecasts predicting moderate to intense rainfall, wind gusts up to 80 km/h (50 mph), and possible hail. Adverse weather is also expected in northern, northeastern, and central parts of the country.
Over 2,000 troops on standby as storm approaches Poland
In anticipation of the impact from the approaching Genoa low, over 2,000 soldiers have been placed on standby. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said during the briefing that Territorial Defense Force troops are ready to act if needed.
"The brigades are in constant contact with regional crisis management centers," he noted, adding that units in the south remain prepared to deploy within six hours.
