The video conference, organised by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, comes ahead of a US-Russia summit scheduled for Friday in Alaska.

The meeting comes after a joint statement earlier this week by 26 EU countries, excluding Hungary, reaffirming a united European stance on the conflict in Ukraine.

The statement said that any path to peace must include Ukraine, and that a diplomatically negotiated solution must also protect Europe’s security interests.
