The European Commission has given the green light for Poland to provide state aid for its first nuclear power plant, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday, calling it a breakthrough decision.
The plant is planned for the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site on the Baltic coast in the Pomerania region. Construction of the first reactor is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the initial unit expected to be completed in 2035. It will feature three nuclear reactors and be constructed by a Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium.

Tusk told reporters the approval allows the government to launch the construction phase this December.

“Construction can now move full speed ahead,” Tusk said, adding that the full funding—PLN 60 billion (EUR 14.2 billion)—has been secured.

The first installment of PLN 4.6 billion in Treasury bonds will be transferred to the state-owned company leading the project this month, he said.

Officials say nuclear energy will become a major pillar of Poland’s energy mix and play a critical role in the country’s transition away from fossil fuels.

The investor and future operator, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), is fully owned by the state.
