Paweł K., from Hrubieszów in eastern Poland, contacted Russian military intelligence between December 2022 and February 2023 using electronic communications, according to Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW).

He offered to provide information about security arrangements at Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport, which the ABW said could have aided planning for an assassination attempt against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The man also expressed willingness to join the Wagner Group and a specific Russian military intelligence unit, the agency said.

The District Court in the eastern city of Zamość convicted Paweł K. on charges of espionage and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition.

The verdict, handed down on Thursday, can still be appealed, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

It said the investigation was conducted by the ABW under the supervision of the National Public Prosecutor's Office.
