Poland marked Constitution Day on Sunday, a national holiday commemorating the adoption of its historic 1791 constitution.

'Shared commitment to freedom, democracy, and sovereignty

"Thank you, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, for your warm Constitution Day message," the Polish embassy said in a social media post.

It added: "On the 235th anniversary of the Constitution of May 3, we deeply value Polish-American partnership, rooted in our shared commitment to freedom, democracy, and sovereignty. We look forward to many more achievements together."

Rubio, in a statement posted on the State Department's website, praised Poland's democratic tradition and its longstanding ties with the United States.

"On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Poland on your Constitution Day," Rubio said.

"Poland's 1791 constitution, the first modern constitution in Europe, stands as a testament to your nation’s enduring commitment to democracy, liberty, and national sovereignty," he added.

'Shared commitment to freedom and prosperity'

"Polish defenders of liberty have been a part of America's story from the beginning, and we continue to be united by our shared commitment to freedom and prosperity," Rubio also said.

He highlighted defence, trade and energy ties between the two countries.

"The United States deeply values our partnership with Poland, which encompasses strong and growing cooperation on defense, trade, and energy security," the statement added.

"As we mark 235 years since Poland’s historic constitution, we celebrate our shared history and look forward to more achievements together in the years to come," Rubio said.

Poland's Constitution of May 3, 1791 is widely recognised as the first modern constitution in Europe and the second in the world after the US Constitution, adopted in 1787.
