Speaking at a ceremony on Friday, Nawrocki outlined Grodecki's key tasks as modernising and reforming the Polish armed forces, adopting key strategic documents including the National Security Strategy and cooperating with NATO allies and partners in other security formats.

The president also stressed the importance of building "social resilience" among Polish citizens.

The appointment fills the vacancy left by Sławomir Cenckiewicz, who stepped down as BBN chief in late April, with General Andrzej Kowalski serving as acting head.

Grodecki spent 14 years at the Polish foreign ministry, including postings in the United States and Sweden, before serving as deputy interior minister under the previous government from 2020.

Retired General Roman Polko, former commander of the elite GROM special forces unit, described the appointment as "a chance for a fresh start," expressing hope that the new BBN chief would engage with all sides and help "restore the bureau as a cross-party platform on security issues."

Wiesław Szczepański, a deputy interior minister from the New Left party, called Grodecki "a well-balanced, competent professional," and said he hoped the new chief would treat his role as "a mission for Poland, not politics."

The BBN advises the president on defence and security matters.
