The detentions were made by Poland's Central Bureau of Police Investigation (CBŚP) in the central Mazowieckie region of which Warsaw is part and in Małopolskie province in the south, officers said on Tuesday.

Investigators allege the group was headed by a woman identified as Swietłana P., while other members were responsible for transporting women to clients and providing security.

According to prosecutors, between two and nine women worked at the escort agency at any given time, handing over part of their earnings to members of the criminal group.

Authorities also allege that the suspects engaged in money laundering by depositing proceeds from the operation into bank accounts opened under their own names and introducing the funds into the legal economy.

Three Ukrainian nationals and two Polish citizens were detained during the raids, overseen by the District Prosecutor's Office in the eastern city of Siedlce, according to CBŚP spokesman Krzysztof Wrześniowski.

The suspects face charges including participation in an organised crime group, leading a criminal organisation, profiting from the prostitution of others, unlawful deprivation of liberty and money laundering.

All five were placed in pre-trial detention.

Police said they seized nearly PLN 100,000 (EUR 23,500, USD 27,000) in cash in various currencies and secured assets belonging to the suspects worth a combined PLN 2.8 million (EUR 660,000, USD 760,000).
