“If the number of infections continues to rise at the present rate this week, with around 20,000 hospital beds occupied, we are going to introduce further curbs,” Niedzielski said on Monday.

On Tuesday, Poland reported 11,670 new coronavirus infections, 18 percent more than a week earlier, and 433 more deaths related to COVID-19.

Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Tuesday that the country could "expect a fifth wave of the pandemic soon."

Seventy-two cases of the new omicron variant of the coronavirus have been reported nationwide so far, he added.
