"The Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained a Belarusian agent yesterday," Tusk wrote on X, adding that the operation was carried out in cooperation with Romanian and Czech security services.
Tomasz Siemoniak, who oversees Poland’s security services, identified the suspected Belarusian agent as "Uladzislau N" and said he had engaged in intelligence activities in both Poland and Hungary.
Prosecutors in Warsaw charged him on Tuesday and requested that he be held in custody for three months pending trial.
Siemoniak said the arrest followed a “long-term operation” coordinated with intelligence agencies in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Moldova, aimed at countering “aggressive activities of Belarusian intelligence services.”
He added that the Polish foreign ministry summoned the Belarusian charge d’affaires in Warsaw to notify them that a diplomat directly involved in spying would have their accreditation revoked and be declared persona non grata.
The case highlights the importance of European intelligence cooperation against Belarusian threats, Siemoniak said.
Poland, a NATO and European Union member, has tense relations with neighbouring Belarus over President Alexander Lukashenko’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and his clampdowns on dissent.
Earlier on Tuesday, Tusk said Poland would close its border with Belarus later this week due to upcoming Zapad-2025 war games led by Russia.
Last week, Warsaw accused Minsk of staging a provocation after the Belarusian KGB security service detained a Polish citizen on espionage charges tied to the drills.
