Earlier on Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Donald Tusk had reported that eight individuals were detained in the past few days on suspicion of preparing acts of sabotage, but the spokesperson for the minister coordinating Poland’s special services, Jacek Dobrzyński, later clarified that the broader investigations have led to 55 arrests.

The detainees are part of several separate, multi-threaded investigations into Russian intelligence activity in Poland.

Among those arrested is a 21-year-old Ukrainian citizen, Danylo H., who reportedly conducted espionage in Poland and Romania. He was detained near Warsaw on 16 October, in cooperation with Romanian intelligence (SRI). Two other Ukrainian nationals linked to Danylo H. were arrested in Bucharest.

A day after his arrest, prosecutors charged Danylo H. with working for Russian intelligence against Poland by preparing acts of sabotage. He has been placed in pretrial detention for three months. Authorities said the suspects had set up a network to transport explosives through Poland and Romania to Ukraine.

The investigation remains ongoing.
