Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) has arrested eight people nationwide on suspicion of planning acts of sabotage, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing and further operations are underway, the head of Poland's government confirmed on social media.

Tomasz Siemoniak, the minister coordinating Poland’s special services, said the detainees had allegedly been conducting reconnaissance of military sites and critical infrastructure and preparing materials for potential sabotage attacks.

The politician added that the ABW is working closely with military intelligence, police and the prosecutor’s office.

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) recently warned that Russian and Belarusian intelligence services could be preparing “false flag” operations in Poland, aiming to damage critical infrastructure and then blame Ukraine for the incidents.

Polish investigators have already linked a major fire at a Warsaw shopping centre earlier this year to Russian intelligence.

Authorities say the blaze was deliberately set on orders from someone based in Russia. Two suspects - identified as Daniil B. and Oleksandr V. - have been charged in connection with the arson.
