Poland reclaims state land sold under PiS government amid probe into transport hub deal

A 160-hectare plot near Grodzisk Mazowiecki, sold in the final two weeks of the former right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) government in December 2023 for the planned Central Transport Hub (CPK) rail link, is set to return to state ownership following the discovery of alleged irregularities in the sale.
Polish politicians have reacted with fury after the PiS government sold 160 hectares of key Central Transport Hub land, sparking corruption allegations. In response to the scandal, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński (pictured centre) suspended a total of four party members.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the land in Zabłotnia, purchased for 22.76 million złoty (€5.4 million), will be repurchased by the state for the same amount.

The agreement was reached after talks between the National Agricultural Support Centre (KOWR) and landowner Piotr Wielgomas, who agreed to return the property without seeking compensation for investment costs.

KOWR confirmed the transfer would take place “as soon as technically possible”, within days or weeks, and that the contract is being finalised in consultation with the Prosecutor General’s Office and a notary.

Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski said the deal “corrects the damage caused by decisions made under the previous PiS administration,” while confirming that broader audits of KOWR operations are ongoing. Two senior officials linked to the original sale have already been dismissed.

Former agriculture minister Robert Telus, a PiS member associated with the case, has been suspended from party duties while a special internal commission reviews the matter. Its chair, Elżbieta Witek, said the inquiry was still underway and cautioned against premature conclusions.
