Poland's Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Tuesday that the government had responded appropriately to Donald Trump's remarks about NATO soldiers in Afghanistan, but suggested President Karol Nawrocki should raise the issue with the US administration.

Speaking to private broadcaster TVN24, Kosiniak-Kamysz said action had been taken "at every level: in parliament, in statements, and in social media posts. The whole government got involved, everyone responsible for this."

'More could be done'

However, the deputy prime minister indicated more could have been done, particularly given President Nawrocki's relationship with the American leader.

"If he has good relations, you can always pass this information on through colleagues who are in contact, if he hasn't had the chance to speak himself since then; more can be done," he said.

Last week, US President Trump claimed that America "never needed" NATO's help and that alliance forces in Afghanistan stayed "a little back, a little off the front lines."

The comments provoked anger among the Polish public and authorities, as well as other NATO allies.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described them as "insulting and frankly appalling" and demanded an apology.

'Poland was always with you'

Poland lost 44 personnel, including 43 soldiers and one paramedic, during its deployment to Afghanistan, where it led operations in Ghazni province.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said he hoped Nawrocki's "good relations" with Trump would allow him to speak openly.

"As a friend: 'I didn't like that. It wasn't like that. Poland was always with you. It led a large province in Afghanistan. It took responsibility and really is on the front line,'" he said.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk recalled attending the funeral of five fallen Polish soldiers in Afghanistan in 2011.

"The American officers who accompanied me then, told me that America would never forget Polish heroes. Perhaps they will remind President Trump of that fact," he wrote.

President Nawrocki praises Polish soldiers

President Nawrocki expressed his conviction on Sunday that Trump had not meant Poland, noting the American president had called Polish soldiers "great warriors" 48 hours earlier.

In a separate post on X, he wrote: "Polish soldiers are Heroes. They deserve respect and words of gratitude for their service."

Meanwhile, a Polish association representing families of fallen soldiers has requested official diplomatic action and called for President Trump to correct his remarks.
