In a statement published late on Wednesday, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said that during the night of 28 January “objects flying in from the direction of Belarus were detected entering Polish airspace”.

Their movement was “continuously monitored by the military radar systems of the Polish Armed Forces”.

As a precautionary measure, authorities introduced temporary restrictions on the use of part of the airspace over north-eastern Poland, in a sparsely populated area along the country’s border with Belarus and Lithuania, close to NATO’s eastern frontier. The restrictions applied exclusively to civilian aviation.

“These actions were preventive in nature and carried out in accordance with existing procedures,” the command said.

Following an analysis of the objects’ flight characteristics - including speed, trajectory and direction - the military assessed that they were “most likely balloon-type objects, moving in line with prevailing meteorological conditions”.

“No threat to the security of the airspace of the Republic of Poland was identified,” the statement added.

The Operational Command said it remains in constant contact with relevant services and institutions, conducting an ongoing exchange of information and providing necessary technical data related to the observed objects.

The military also placed the incident in a broader strategic context, noting that “such incidents form part of a catalogue of hybrid activities Poland has been facing along its eastern direction”.

It added that the situation is being monitored on an ongoing basis and that “the forces and assets of the Polish Armed Forces remain ready to carry out tasks related to the protection of Polish airspace”.
