Lower-house Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty made the remarks after talks in Warsaw with Yaël Braun-Pivet, head of France’s National Assembly.

"Relations with France are hugely important for Poland," Czarzasty told reporters after the meeting.

He thanked Braun-Pivet for agreeing to mark the 35th anniversary of the Weimar Triangle in Poland, referring to the trilateral cooperation format linking Warsaw, Paris and Berlin.

"The Weimar Triangle is important to us because cooperation between Paris, Berlin and Warsaw strengthens the European Union," he said, adding that the EU has a key role to play "in a changing world."

Czarzasty said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had underscored the need for closer European cooperation.

"We already know that we must rely more strongly on each other. We also know where our enemy is—that enemy attacked Ukraine. We know that we must help Ukraine," he said.

He added that the United States remains an important partner for Poland, but argued that Europe must build its own strength.

Braun-Pivet said her talks with Czarzasty focused mainly on multilateral relations, Poland’s assistance to Ukraine and women’s rights.

"The issue of women’s rights should be important for all of us," she said, adding that she hopes to deepen ties with Poland through frequent interparliamentary meetings.

While in Warsaw, Braun-Pivet was also scheduled to meet Polish upper-house Speaker Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska later on Friday.

The Weimar Triangle was established in 1991 by the foreign ministers of Poland, France and Germany to promote cooperation among the three countries across a range of areas.
