The announcement was made as the two countries' defence ministers attended a joint news conference in Bratislava on Tuesday.

Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák said talks were under way on specific initiatives and on the strengths each country would bring to joint work.

“We agreed that not in years, not in months, but within weeks we will present specific joint projects and areas of cooperation,” Kaliňák said.

“We will bring our companies together, possibly establish joint ventures, and we will be able to offer not only strengthened defence for our countries, but also increased investment inflows into our economies and new jobs," he added.

Poland’s Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said cooperation would strengthen both countries and enhance security.

“We are talking about the defence of borders, airports and critical infrastructure,” he said, citing threats that “do not always occur directly at the border” and referring to "provocations" at airports.

Kosiniak-Kamysz outlined advanced work on equipment including the Piorun very short-range air defence system and armoured vehicles such as Rosomak and Borsuk.

He said many projects were beyond early stages and that at least one should be finalised in the first half of this year, with May seen as an opportunity to sign company-level agreements.

Referring to the European Union's SAFE defence investment programme, Kosiniak-Kamysz said the initiative "opens up the possibility not only to arm the military in a short period of time, but also to develop the defence industry."

Kosiniak-Kamysz also said that Poland was interested in cooperation on nuclear deterrence with partners in NATO including France and the United States.

“One does not replace the other; they complement each other,” he said. “Poland is interested in cooperation on nuclear deterrence with its partners within NATO. Of course, this strengthens the region rather than weakening it.”
